I had the chance to manage a workshop with 8 students about sound learning and musical creativity. It has taken place in the high school of Art (ENSA) in the city of Limoges (France) during 5 days in January 2018.

I wanted to start from “Berlin school” inspiration and also, I wanted to settle the music in a context. At last, I wanted to emphasis the difference “hearing” and “listening” during the whole process. Therefore, they would record sounds from other workshops that took place at the same time in other places in the school.

We were trapped in a room without windows during these 5 days. Nevertheless, we were here to be focussed on sound and creativity… We didn’t know each other but the feeling was good quickly. Nobody was musician except one of them (hand-drum) and another knew a few about guitar.

First, we listened to some music and I made them discovering artists in electronic music from the 70s to nowadays. Then I taught them a few about analogue synthesis and the basics from synths. For example : how to choose a sound or start from scratch, tweak it, how to make it alive with frequency, filters and modulations, and then how to make sequences. We used an Elektron Analog Keys and a MS20mini. I chose the Elektron because you can stack 4 monophonic synth and it has an easy-to-use step sequencer.

We recorded the daily works and then I mixed / mastered it in my studio few weeks after. I’ve “changed” nothing created. It’s all their/them/ and a very few from me. During the whole week, the students went over my expectations as you can hear.
